Within the greater Lincoln design team, two particular women work together to help design Lincoln's aspirational interiors in the Color & Materials Lab. Marcia Salzburg is a former fashion designer with the ability to recognize and commit to a trend. Janet Seymour is an industrial designer who has a deep love for functional sculpture.

The two women, one from a world of shapes, balance, and proportion, and the other from a world of color, trend-hunting, and boundary-pushing, work together to create a cocoon of comfort, class, and inspiration - in a very small space.

Flu for Free - Northbay Healthcare

Two recent articles - one by the former publisher of the Vacaville Reporter and one by a reporter in the Los Angeles Times - made mention of the cost of flu shots. In each, flu shots at national chain pharmacies were tagged at about $30. That is not insignificant for people on fixed incomes.

In an amusing aside, the local writer questioned his timing. The healthcare system he normally used had a long line, so he went to the national pharmacy. Only after going through both the physical and fiscal pain of a flu shot did he learn NorthBay Healthcare that week was offering free drive-through flu shots to all comers, regardless of whether they were patients of NorthBay's medical group.

Timing is everything in life and in medicine.

The L.A. Times article said that in some ways it is surprising that flu shots do not cost more. It noted the complexity of making the vaccine every year and all the liability problems associated with its manufacture and distribution. A few years ago these problems resulted in a shortage of doses and many people who should have had the shots had to do without.

NorthBay customarily makes free shots available as a community service and as part of our obligation to the community. We usually order enough doses to make sure our medical group patients have access to the vaccine and to make the vaccine available to others who may not have been able to get the shots elsewhere.

The flu is nothing to fool with since it can be deadly, particularly for the very young and the elderly. Some have concerns about getting the shots, fearing complications could ensue. I believe those concerns are without substance, but this is a free country - which is why we offer flu shots for free at least once during the flu season.

Without such precautions you may well get the flu - for free.

City of Sand City receives approvals for its Desalinization Facility


The Monterey Peninsula is one of many regions in California that have increased water demand with decreasing water supply and reliability. Engineering and construction of a local water desalination facility was one water supply solution that was investigated for the City of Sand City in a 2002 study.                           

Creegan + D’Angelo Engineers played a pivotal role in the development of the facility which eventually became known as the Sand City Water Supply Project. Richard Simonitch, PE, Principal Civil Engineer and City Engineer for the City of Sand City had a leadership role in developing one of the first California Desalination Facilities. On March 30, 2010, the California Department of Public Health approved this water for public use by the California American Water Company, Monterey District.

Creegan + D’Angelo has provided planning, engineering and permitting services since the project’s conception in 2002 including preparation and submittal of environmental permits, grant funding, and preparing the engineering design of the brackish water feed and brine disposal infrastructure for the City’s new desalination facility. The desalination facility uses reverse osmosis and ultraviolet disinfection to treat otherwise unusable brackish water drawn from wells adjacent to the beach in Sand City. The concentrated salt solution is returned to a horizontal injection well at the same salinity as seawater into the sand aquifer below the surf zone, instead of using a direct ocean discharge.                           

Permitting for desalination facilities is a complex process in California, one that has delayed the implementation of nearly all of the currently planned facilities. The Sand City desalination facility is the first full-scale, municipal desalination plant in California to receive permitting under the new LT2 and CDPH surface water treatment regulations.
